Leadership Award

Gene Carroll, co-director of the New York State AFL-CIO/Cornell Union Leadership Institute at ILR in New York City, has received The Labor Leadership Award given by the Civil Service Merit Council.

At a council ceremony in New York City this fall, Carroll was recognized for his "life-long dedication to the labor movement as an organizer and educator and his commitment to strengthening that movement through the training of its members and the nurturing of its future leaders."

In accepting the award, Carroll said, "Please know that by recognizing my work you are also acknowledging the amazing work and influence of my colleagues at ILR. They inspire, support, challenge and educate me continuously."

"I also accept your recognition for the many labor educators who work long and hard to advance social and economic justice. This includes my colleagues at Cornell, but also those at the Joseph S. Murphy Labor Institute Labor Institute at the City University of New York, and members of the United Association for Labor Education around the country," he said.

An adjunct instructor of labor history at the Murphy Institute, Carroll joined ILR in 1996 and directs, with ILR Senior Extension Associate Sally Alvarez, the Union Leadership Institute. The institute is an executive-level leadership development program for public and private sector labor union leaders.

He has worked in the labor movement since 1975 for organizations including New York Jobs with Justice, United Mine Workers of America, Amalgamated Clothing and Textile Workers Union and the Commonwealth Association of Students.

The Civil Service Merit Council, based in New York City, works to ensure that appointments to public employment positions be made through competitive examinations.
