Kheel Center Award

Rachel Chiu ’19 is the winner of the Kheel Center’s first-ever Undergraduate Research Award of $500 for her critical analysis of a collection of trade association posters held by the center.

Chiu’s paper, written for ILRLR 3055: Rhetoric of the Labor Movement, taught by Senior Lecturer Samuel Nelson, examined the metaphors, political cartoons and extended text of the posters.

The posters were printed by the National Association of Manufacturers in 1918 and displayed in more than a million factories around the nation.

Judges, including Kheel Center Director Cheryl Beredo and research archivist Patrizia Sione, said they chose Chiu’s paper because of its quality and creativity. “It was original and insightful,” Sione said.
