Highlights from ILR - June 2008
Coca-Cola, Nike, Walt Disney Co., the Service Employees International Union, the International Labor Rights Forum, the World Bank's International Finance Corporation and the U.S. Department of Labor were among participants at a seminar sponsored by ILR's Global Labor Institute. Focused on workers' freedom of association under corporate "codes of conduct" for supplier factories overseas, the seminar was held in May in New York City. Five ILR students awarded 2008 ILR International Experience Grants will conduct research or begin internships this summer in the United Kingdom, Nepal, Thailand and India. The grant winners were named by ILR International Programs. Read more about the five students and their summer projects.
Escalating costs worldwide for food production and purchase were the focus of a landmark meeting organized by the Global Labor Institute and its director, Sean Sweeney. An international trade union delegation met in New York City with representatives of three United States food sector unions to begin to draft trade union responses and strategies. The meeting was co-sponsored by Local 1500 of the United Food and Commercial Workers on May 9. The Retail, Warehouse and Department Store Union and the International Brotherhood of Teamsters were also represented.
