March 25 2008
AFL-CIO Leader Keynote Speaker April 9
AFL-CIO Director of Organizing Stewar Acuff will be the keynote speaker at Union Days. The AFL-CIO has 10 million members.
Union Days is sponsored annually by ILR. Its purpose is to celebrate the union movement with all Cornell students, educate students and to provide career opportunities. This year's theme is "Worker Power and the '08 Election: Is Change For Real?"
The 2008 theme underscores the relationship between the labor movement and current political issues, said Risa Lieberwitz, Associate Professor in the ILR Department of Collective Bargaining, Labor Law, and Labor History.
In addition to the keynote address from 4:30 to 6 p.m. April 9 in 105 Ives Hall, Jane McDonald-Pines will participate in "Labor and Politics," a Union Days panel discussion from 4:30 to 6 p.m. April 10 in 105 Ives Hall. The panel brings together individuals from politics, labor unions and think tanks. Panel members include New York Assemblywoman Barbara Lifton; Economic Policy Institute President Lawrence Mishel; and Phaedra Ellis-Lamkins, who is executive officer of the South Bay AFL-CIO Labor Council and executive director of Working Partnerships USA. A social justice career fair from 1 to 4 p.m. April 10 in Ives Hall is also part of Union Days.
Union Days events are free and open to the public. More information about Union Days is available through the ILR News Center (www.ilr.cornell.edu/news) under "Events."
