CHERI Receives Renewed Support from the Mellon Foundation
July 12 2005
The Cornell Higher Education Research Institute (CHERI), based at ILR, has just received renewed support from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. The grant of $677,000 will enable CHERI to continue its work on identifying pressing national issues in higher education and suggesting appropriate responses. Under the directorship of ILR faculty member Ronald G. Ehrenberg, the Irving M. Ives Professor of Industrial Relations and Economics, CHERI has explored issues such as the growing importance and costs of science at universities, how financial aid affects enrollment and retention, and the problems of declining government support and rising tuition.
CHERI is considered one of the leading centers in the United States for research on the finance and governance of higher education. Its affiliated faculty members span a variety of disciplines and come from five Cornell colleges and six other colleges and universities in the United States and other countries around the world. The CHERI advisory board includes two former Cornell presidents, Dale Corson and Frank H.T. Rhodes, and a chancellor emeritus of the State University of New York system, D. Bruce Johnstone.
The Mellon Foundation has supported CHERI since it was established in 1998. CHERI also receives financial support from the Atlantic Philanthropies (USA) Inc. and the TIAA-CREF Institute. For more information, see the CHERI Web site.
