See what Harvey Schachter of The Globe and Mail (Toronto) has to say about this book.
Samuel Bacharach, the ILR McKelvey-Grant Professor of Labor Management, shows leaders how to manage change for the long-term while keeping people on your side with his latest book Keep Them On Your Side. The book is a follow-up to Get Them On Your Side: Win Support, Convert Skeptics, Get Results, which was recognized by Fast Company magazine as one of the 15 best business books of 2005. Similar recognition was accorded the book by The Globe and Mail, a major Canadian newspaper. Harvard Management Update also just released a two-page discussion of the book's central idea.
Keep Them on Your Side addresses the critical issue of how leaders can keep coworkers on their side and sustain momentum to achieve goals. Developing an agenda, identifying allies and resistors, and assembling a coalition are only the first steps to instigating change -- figuring out how to "keep people on your side" is key to moving your project across the finish line. The book covers how to create momentum, maintain resources and capacity, monitor and make adjustments, motivate to sustain focus, and mobilize support and anticipate opposition. Get Them on Your Side addressed how to win allies and head off resistance. Using illustrations from business, government, academia, and nonprofit organizations, the book shows how to build political competence and develop specific leadership skills to get results.
Professor Bacharach builds on the ILR tradition of reaching out to academic and practitioner audiences. He conducts seminars on the topic of "The Proactive Leader: How to Get Things Done in Your Organization" and offers a certificate for leaders who complete all three seminars. He is also Director of ILR's New York City-based Institute for Workplace Studies, is Director of ILR's Master of Professional Studies (MPS), and is the Director of the Smithers Institute for Alcohol-Related Workplace Studies.
Both books are published by Platinum Press.
