  • Jerry Alpern is a member of ILR’s first freshman class.
  • Daniel Alpern (Jerry’s brother), on leave from the College of Engineering to serve in the Navy, writes asking about a transfer to ILR. One month later, Daniel dies in the line of duty.
  • The Daniel Alpern Scholarship, ILR’s first scholarship fund, is established by Harry and Sophie Alpern in memory of their son, Daniel.
  • One year later, The Daniel Alpern Prize is established. It is ILR’s first prize for scholarship and leadership and remains the most prestigious senior award.

Over the years an impressive group of students has received recognition because of the Alpern Family's benefactions to the School. There is no truer ILRie than Jerry Alpern. It is hard to imagine the significance of the gift originally given by Mr. and Mrs. Harry Alpern (Jerry and Daniel's parents) and the tradition that the Alperns have continued in Daniel's name.

Daniel's legacy to ILR is 390 scholarships and 129 prizes being awarded to outstanding ILR students to date. The entire School pays tribute to this remarkable legacy and this remarkable family, with deepest gratitude.
