Walking Tours on Manhattan's Lower East Side to Focus on Roles of Immigrants

As part of the New York City MPS internship program, Professor Sam Bacharach will lead two walking tours of Lower Manhattan:
Immigrant New York: Wednesday: September 14th, 3-5 PM
A walking tour through the many layers of the multi-ethnic Lower East Side to see the historic and architectural landmarks associated with African, Chinese, German, Irish, Italian, Jewish and Latino immigrants. Stops include: The "Tweed" Courthouse, Five Points, the African Burial Ground, and sites associated with Dr. Sun Yat Sen, Jacob Riis, Abraham Cahan, Pierre Toussaint, Emma Goldman, and many others.
Immigrant Labor, Immigrant Triumph: Wednesday, September 28th, 3-5 PM
A tour featuring the role that immigrants and the labor movement have played in the growth of New York City. Stops include: the Labor Lyceum, the first Labor Day Parade (1882), the founding site of the ILGWU, the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory, and sites associated with Emma Goldman, Louis Kossuth.
There is space for an additional 8 people to join each tour. Any member of the ILR community interested in participating should contact Katie Briggs at kb41@cornell.edu. First preference will be given to ILR students.
