Martin T. Wells named IMS Fellow

Martin T. Wells, Director of Research and the Charles A. Alexander Professor of Statistical Sciences, Cornell University, was named Fellow of the Institute of Mathematical Statistics (IMS). The induction ceremony took place August 2, 2006 at the IMS Annual Meeting in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
Professor Wells received the award for important contributions to the statistical theory of goodness of fit, approximate inference in small samples, Bayesian statistics, survival analysis, and shrinkage estimation; for methodological contributions in genetics and in empirical legal studies; and for excellence in teaching, editorial services, and academic leadership.
Each Fellow nominee is assessed by a committee of his/her peers for the award. In 2006, after reviewing 44 nominations, 20 were selected for Fellowship. Created in 1933, the Institute of Mathematical Statistics is a member organization which fosters the development and dissemination of the theory and applications of statistics and probability. The IMS has 4500 active members throughout the world. Approximately 5% of the current IMS membership has earned the status of fellowship.
