Team to now compete at National HRGames in June

Cornell HR Games 2006A Cornell Team of three ILR School seniors – Anna Fishman, Maureen Martin, and Rebecca Ong – won the Society for Human Resource Management's (SHRM) 2006 Northeast Regional HRGames this past weekend in New Jersey. Coached by ILR Assistant Professor of HR Studies Christopher J. Collins, the team will now compete in the Annual HRGames National Championship held during SHRM’s Annual Convention, June 25-26 in Washington, D.C.

"Please join me in congratulating Anna, Maureen, and Rebecca. I am very proud of their hard work in preparing and training for the games and for their huge success at the competition," said coach Professor Collins. "We look forward to continuing our success at the National HRGames."

The SHRM HRGames consist of a one- or two-day series of Jeopardy-style game show matches between teams of undergraduate students from various colleges and universities. The exam tests the students' knowledge on HR and labor relations issues (topics include such areas as staffing, training, compensation, benefits, labor law, collective bargaining, motivation, leadership theories, and workplace health and safety). In each round, students select points and a category of questions. The question is read twice and the teams have 15 seconds to supply the correct answer. Winners of each regional event will go on to compete at the national competition in June.

There were 16 teams in last weekend's regional competition, representing 15 different northeastern universities. The Cornell Team beat a team of seniors from Penn State in the finals, overcoming a 4000 point deficit in the first round of the finals to win 4400 points to 4000.

In addition to the ILR students competing in the HRGames, ILR also hosts a booth at the June SHRM convention showcasing our degree programs and outreach services.

Preliminary rounds will take place on Sunday, June 25, while the semifinal and final rounds will be held on Monday, June 26, at the Washington Convention Center.
