Sonnenstuhl is new Director of Graduate Studies
January 17 2006
ILR's Dean Harry Katz announced the appointment of William Sonnenstuhl, associate professor in the department of Organizational Behavior and extension, as Director of Graduate Studies. In this capacity, Sonnenstuhl is responsible for overseeing the ILR School's graduate programs, which include the MS/PhD, MILR, MILR/MBA, MPS on Campus, MPS in NYC, and the 5 Year BILR/MS.
As director, his responsibilities include convening and presiding over graduate field meetings, communicating policies, procedures, and other graduate business to the members of the graduate field faculty, students and staff, overseeing the admissions process, allocating financial support for graduate students, nominating new faculty to the field, ensuring student and faculty compliance with the Code of Legislation of the Graduate Faculty, and assisting students.
Sonnenstuhl replaces John Bunge, associate professor in the department of social statistics, who served in this capacity for over 5 years. "We all owe a great deal to John Bunge. He has done a remarkable job institutionalizing and organizing our operating procedures. John's hard work has made it much easier to follow him" said Sonnenstuhl. "As Director of Graduate Studies, I hope to spend the next few weeks meeting with faculty and students to understand how we can move ahead and meet everyone's needs. Mine will be an open door, and I look forward to working with all of you."
Sonnenstuhl teaches courses in the department of organizational behavior. These include: "Cultures of Work Organizations", "Organizations and Deviance", "Introduction to Macro Organizational Behavior", "Blue-Collar Work in America", and "Analysis and Research Methods". He is also associate director of the ILR School's R. Brinkley Smithers Institute for Alcohol-Related Workplace Studies, where he conducts research on substance abuse and the workplace and education programs for labor and management. In addition, he is chair of the extension department.
