Master of Professional Studies in Industrial and Labor Relations

Student Profiles

The MPS degree is geared towards experienced professionals from a range of occupational backgrounds who now desire an intellectual challenge and a distinguished credential. They come to the program from a variety of organizational settings, but with a shared interest in the dynamics of the workplace. These students are looking for a framework through which to analyze their work environment, new concepts and ideas they can use to push their colleagues and organizations in new directions, and the opportunity to research and document their insights and learning. Many also appreciate the benefits of having a degree conferred by Cornell, which might facilitate a promotion or propel them into a different job.

MPS students are bright, demanding, conscientious, articulate, and knowledgeable about work-related issues.  Mature students who work full time while attending graduate school tend to be fully committed to their education: they complete their work, show up at class, and are active participants in their own learning. As several such students have pointed out, when people do something voluntarily and for themselves, they do crazy things to accomplish their goals.
