This is one of the better places to begin your research on benefits.  There is a FAQ for benefits, a "problem solver" question and answer section, a variety of free publications and a member's only section.

Questions and Answers about Section 125, COBRA, HIPAA, and more. Comprehensive index of Internet  resources alphabetically by topic. Job openings and Jobs wanted. Keyword search capability. Opportunity to communicate with people with similar benefits interests and experiences.

Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS)
BLS publishes a large amount of information on the wages, earnings, and benefits of workers. Generally, this information is categorized in one or more of the following ways: Geographic area (national, regional, State, metropolitan area, or county data), Occupation (such as teacher) and Industry (such as manufacturing) .  Such publications as Incidence and Provision of Employee Benefits and National Compensation Survey can be found here.

Pension Benefit Guaranty Corporation
The Pension Benefit Guaranty Corporation (PBGC) is a federal corporation created by the Employee Retirement Income Security Act of 1974 (ERISA) to encourage the continuation and maintenance of defined benefit pension plans, provide timely and uninterrupted payment of pension benefits to participants and beneficiaries in plans covered by PBGC, and keep pension insurance premiums at the lowest level necessary to carry out the Corporation's objectives.  This site includes an FAQ for plan administrators, contact information,downloadable forms and useful links.

Social Security
Official web site of the Social Security Administration. Reference Guide for employers in their "Employer's Kit".  Also latest information of SSA's rules and regulations as well as proposed legislation.  Online publications   including "Social Security Handbook", Welfare Reform updates, and "Factors in Evaluating Disability."      

The Employee Benefits Security Administration (EBSA)
The Employee Benefits Security Administration (EBSA) is committed to educating and assisting over 200 million pension, health and other employee benefit plan participants and beneficiaries and more than 3 million plan sponsors and members of the employee benefit community. EBSA promotes voluntary compliance and facilitates self-regulation, working diligently to provide quality assistance to plan participants and beneficiaries.

Online Journals

Compensation and Working Conditions Online
The online CWC is an e-journal from the Bureau of Labor Statistics providing a current, convenient, user-friendly, and economical source of information and data on compensation and workplace issues. It contains analytical articles, news items, summary information presented as single page charts or tables, and statistical data on:

     Occupational pay
     Employment Cost Index
     Employee benefits
     Occupational injuries and illnesses
     Major work stoppages

The website will be updated on a monthly basis with new materials, each of which will have a posting date. Older materials will be archived and available through a search function.  Besides the main homepage, there are homepages for three major topics-compensation, safety and health, and collective bargaining.

HR Magazine
The Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM ) publishes this online journal with free access to some content in addition to "members only" added value material.


 

Professional Organizations

Actuaries, Consultants, Administrators, and other Benefit Professionals
ASPA is a national organization of retirement benefits professionals. The purpose of the American Society of Pension Actuaries is to educate pension actuaries, consultants, administrators and other benefits professionals, and to preserve and enhance the private pension system as part of the development of a cohesive and coherent national retirement income policy.

International Society of Certified Employee Benefit Specialists
The International Society of Certified Employee Benefit Specialists is an educational association dedicated to providing professional development opportunities for its members--Certified Employee Benefit Specialists. This page features information for members as well as non-members.

National Institute of Pension Administrators
The National Institute of Pension Administrators provides educational programs for retirement plan professionals.  This page has information concerning their courses, conferences and local chapter activities.  There is also a useful "Buyer's Guide" as well as links to other resources.
