ILRHR 465 Globalization at Work & ILRHR 694 Competing in Services
HR 465
Seminar that examines how firms are responding to globalization and compares the strategies and outcomes of restructuring in manufacturing and service enterprises. While globalization has been a continuing phenomenon in manufacturing, recent changes in multilateral agreements, advances in information technology, and market deregulation have led to a process of globalization in service activities as well. Outcomes for firms, employees, consumers, and unions are examined.
HR 694
Examines alternative service management strategies and outcomes, with particular focus on customer relationship management. Priority is given to analyzing the relationship between business strategy, marketing, operations management, organizational structures, and human resource practices. For these classes, methodical use of Catherwood Library's ILR RESEARCH PORTAL is recommended. It is necessary to look at all the categories in the navigation menu under the heading FIND MATERIALS in the left column. In addition, appropriate SUBJECT GUIDES should be selected as well.
A quick approach in seeking articles is to use FIND ARTICLES from the Library Gateway. This will search nearly 400 journals simultaneously if selected. Notice the databases with the most “hits”. Use these databases methodically to find more information.
To methodically find articles that will illuminate the issues surrounding globalization, click on "Article Databases" under FIND MATERIALS. This will open a page listing numerous article databases. The most useful for this class will be -
ABI/Inform
ASAPII Database (via ILR LEXIS ID)
Business Source Premier
EconLit
EMERALD FULLTEXT
PAIS International
Do not overlook the other article databases, however. Keep in mind that only about 70 percent of the articles retrieved will be available full-text at your desktop. You will have to seek the journals available in print format via the library catalog.
Many of the best resources will be found by clicking on items found in the following three categories under SUBJECT GUIDES in the ILR RESEARCH PORTAL:
- International/Global
- Statistical Sources (note in particular, Statistical Universe)
- Company/Industry
What follows is a Selection of Statistical Background and Other Sources - to help one understand market trends.
You will need to identify the NAICS code for the service industries you are interested in. Most data is presented by industry code. Refer to the NAICS (North American Industry Classification System).
County Business Patterns
County Business Patterns is an annual series that provides subnational economic data by industry. The series is useful for studying the economic activity of small areas; analyzing economic changes over time; and as a benchmark for statistical series, surveys, and databases between economic censuses. Businesses use the data for analyzing market potential, measuring the effectiveness of sales and advertising programs, setting sales quotas, and developing budgets. Government agencies use the data for administration and planning.
