At the end of World War II organized labor became a major social and political force on the national level. For the next three decades labor's ranks continued to grow and wages and benefits improved. Following the oil shock and recession of the mid-1970s, labor slipped into a decline that has only recently shown signs of being reversed. Students taking this course will emerge with an in-depth knowledge of labor's role over a 50 year period covering the early Cold War, the Civil Rights era, Vietnam, the anti-union attacks of the 1980s, and recent attempts to rebuild the labor movement around new principles of organizing and inclusion.
