Degrees & College Credits
Cornell University Labor Studies students can now earn a bachelor's degree in Labor Studies from the National Labor College. This Degree Partnership Program allows students to jointly enroll Cornell credits with the National Labor College. This makes it possible to earn credits toward both a Cornell Certificate in Labor Studies and a bachelor's degree from the National Labor College at the same time.
Degree Requirements:
In order to receive a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Labor Studies, a student must successfully complete a total of 120 credit hours:
- Labor Studies Major Coursework - 30 Credits total. Complete any 15 credits (5 courses) from Cornell; 15 credits (5 courses) from the NLC.
- General Studies/ Elective Coursework - 90 credits total. Credits can be earned through a combination of transfer credits, additional Cornell and/or NLC coursework and life experience credits. Students must successfully complete at least one course in the following disciplines (1) English (2) Humanities (3) Math (4) Science (5) Social Science.
- Life Experience/Transfer Credits: Up to 30 credits can be earned for life experience through the portfolio preparation course Educational Planning. In addition, up to 90 credits can be transferred. Only 90 credits can be earned between transfer credits and life experience credits combined.
Required Course on Educational Planning
All students enrolled in the National Labor College Program must complete the Educational Planning Course. This course is designed to help students identify and clarify their educational goals. This includes:
- identification and categorization of prior college level learning with preparation of a portfolio for receiving credit for that learning
- identification of major course of study which will be written up in the form of an individualized degree program
- development of a personal mission statement justifying how that course of study will help the student reach her/his educational goals.
Tuition and Fees
The current tuition (as of July 1, 2005) for the NLC is $150 per credit. The joint-enrollment fee for courses taken at Cornell is $50 per credit. Financial aid is available to qualifying students.
