Panel Discussion:
Women Transforming American Labor:  Retrospect and Prospect Convener:  Dorothy Sue Cobble, Rutgers University

Panelists will explore the innovative strategies used by labor women to secure rights, recognition, and power at work; and offer case studies of how women are inventing new forms of worker representation.  Panelists will draw on their chapters from the new book, THE SEX OF CLASS: WOMEN TRANSFORMING AMERICAN LABOR, which is being released in conjunction with the Sisters On The Frontline Conference.  Panelists will also discuss some of the most vibrant and forward-thinking social movements of our era:  the clerical worker protests of the 1970s; the upsurge of union organizing in service jobs; worker centers and community unions of immigrant women; and innovative labor NGOs, cross-border alliances, and global labor federations.
