Crafting & Implementing A New Labor Policy with Harry C. Katz and Thomas A. Kochan
Time & Location: The Cornell Club, 6 East 44th Street (between Madison and Fifth) in Manhattan from 6:30pm to 9:00pm
Next year will bring a new administration, Congress, and a historic opportunity to craft a much-needed new national labor policy. There will be efforts to update and fix labor law, enact new family or sick leave policies, and reinvigorate and redirect the enforcement agencies of the Department of Labor, the National Labor Relations Board, and the National Mediation Board.
Will we repeat old mistakes and get bogged down in the ideological business-labor battles of the past, or will we be able to use this window of opportunity to move labor policy in a new, sensible direction? Dean Katz and Professor Kochan will offer ideas and lead a discussion for how to take advantage of these opportunities and meet these challenges.
Harry C. Katz is the Kenneth F. Kahn Dean and the Jack Sheinkman Professor of Collective Bargaining at the ILR School. He received his Ph.D. in Economics from the University of California at Berkeley. After teaching at MIT he came to Cornell University in 1985.
Thomas A. Kochan is the George Maverick Bunker Professor of Management at MIT’s Sloan School of Management and Co-Director of both the MIT Workplace Center and the Institute for Work and Employment Research. Having taught at the ILR School since 1973, he arrived at MIT in 1980 and from 1988 to 1991 served as Head of the Behavioral and Policy Sciences Area in the Sloan School. He received his Ph.D. in Industrial Relations from the University of Wisconsin in 1973.
Dean Katz and Professor Kochan are co-authors of the widely used textbook, An Introduction to Collective Bargaining and Industrial Relations.
