Xiaotian started her Ph.D. in Labor Relations at Renmin University of China in 2008. At Renmin University she worked as a research associate at the Research Institute of Labor Relations.
At Cornell, Xiaotian's research will mainly focus on the comparative analysis of collective bargaining and labor policy between the United States and China which is part of her dissertation. She intends to study the characteristics and trends of the Chinese collective bargaining system alongside the commonalities and differences of labor policy and institutions in the two countries. Xiaotian's research is largely based on her fieldwork. In another study, she will also try to investigate the framework of Chinese collective negotiation on the industrial level and determine the different models and logics of negotiation in China.
