Call for Proposals for Summer 2008 travel

Eligible Students: ILR undergraduates and MILRs who will not graduate before January ’09

Amount: Awards typically range from $500 to $2,000

ILR International Programs encourages interested students to apply for a limited number of small travel grants aimed at supporting ILR-related activities abroad. Please note that seniors and MILR students who are in their final semester are not eligible. These small grants are intended to subsidize a student’s budget and should not be seen as the exclusive source of financing. 

Funding will be awarded on a competitive basis to support activities that enhance your ILR education through an international experience, such as:

+ international volunteer work with a group or organization engaged in activities broadly related to ILR’s mission;
+ the international fieldwork component of a research project;
+ participatory role at an ILR-related global conference;
+ language immersion program where student has already undertaken classroom study.

Grants are not available for ILR Credit Internships, Cornell Abroad, or for travel to a student’s home country.

A complete application will include:
1. A detailed description of the proposed activity.
2. A budget indicating the amount and proposed use of funds (max: $2,000)
3. A letter from the organization where student will be volunteering, indicating the organization’s willingness to accept the student. In the case of language immersion or conference participation, a description of the program and letter of acceptance.
4. A letter of recommendation from an ILR faculty member indicating support for the student’s proposed activity and specific request for funds

Application Guidelines
Interested students must submit a project description of the internship or volunteer activity:

Project Description: A detailed description of the proposed activity (including location, organization, description of the project) and the reason for the grant request (objective).

Budget:
A detailed budget indicating clearly the amount requested and information on any other sources of funding you will draw upon or intend to apply for.

Letter 1: A letter from the organization where the student will be interning or volunteering, indicating the organization's willingness to accept the student. In the case of language immersion or conference participation, a description of the program and letter of acceptance.

Letter 2: A letter of recommendation from an ILR faculty member indicating support for the student's proposed activity and specific request for funds.

Please follow these steps to submit your application:

  1. Write your project description and budget as two separate files.
  2. Submit them electronically by filling out the application form.
  3. Arrange to have the two letters sent directly to Robin Remick, Managing Director, ILR International Programs. They can be sent via e-mail to rjr4@cornell.edu, or faxed to 607-255-7774.
  4. All items must be received by the submission date. Incomplete applications will not be considered. Proposals will be reviewed by the ILR International Programs Faculty Committee.
