Alistair Rainnie, Australia
Al Rainnie is Professor in the Department of Management at Monash University, Victoria, Australia. He is a member of the Union Strategy Research Group which is part of the Australian Centre for Research in Employment and Work (ACREW). Until 2005 he was the founding Director of the Monash Institute for Regional Studies. Al has a first degree from the University of York (UK) and a PhD from Newcastle Polytechnic (now the University of Northumbria at Newcastle).
Al has published a number of books dealing with industrial relations and small firms, restructuring of work in central and eastern Europe, trade unions in Poland and regional restructuring in Australia. His latest book is ‘Globalisation, State and Labour (Routledge 2006) co-edited with Peter Fairbrother from Cardiff University.
Al is currently working on community unionism in Australia. This was the subject of a paper he presented at the Global Companies – Global Unions conference in New York in Feb 2006. At Cornell he has been working with Lowell Turner and Kate Bronfenbrenner
