Union Renewal in an International Economy
ILR Faculty and Students Participate in Transatlantic Social Dialogue in Brussels
ILR faculty and students recently participated in the second in an ongoing series of Transatlantic Dialogue meetings jointly sponsored by the ILR School, the European Trade Union Institute, Hans-Boeckler-Stiftung, and Friedrich-Ebert Stiftung. The May 2004 conference, held in Brussels, included a mix of researchers, students and union officials, with an emphasis on bringing together union innovators and alliance builders on both sides of the Atlantic. UNITE president Bruce Raynor, ILR '72, and Tom Woodruff, executive vice president of SEIU, together with several of their European counterparts were among those representing unions.
The conference focused on cross-national union collaboration at multinational corporations. Five ILR-Cornell Ph.D. students also gave presentations, and one MILR student and two undergrads also participated in the sessions and discussions. View the complete agenda (pdf). Next year's Transatlantic Social Dialogue in this continuing collaboration among ILR, ETUI, HBS, and FES will take place at the IG Metall union training facility in Berlin.
