Union and Management Leaders from Seoul to Visit Buffalo

Visitors from Seoul, South Korea

ILR's Institute for Industry Studies (IIS) in Buffalo was proud to host LG Electronics, a major electronics corporation from South Korea, for a two day human resources and labor relations benchmarking visit.  In addition to the in-house seminar, IIS arranged plant tours to Trek Inc., a small electronics plant in Medina, NY, and to Ford Motor Company's Buffalo stamping plant. The trip also included meetings with the Orleans Manufacturing Council, UAW Local 686 in Lockport, and ILR offices in downtown Buffalo.  ILR Professor Harry Katz joined Lou Jean Fleron and Art Wheaton in presenting at the 2-day seminar.

Participants included LG's vice president of HR, union and HR managers from nine LG manufacturing plants in South Korea, and members of the Korean Ministry of Labor.  Wheaton, who will be visiting LG Electronics in South Korea in May and possibly an LG facility in China in June, remarks,"the level of cooperation by the companies and unions involved was extraordinary." ILR Ph.D. candidate Soonwon Kwon was instrumental in coordinating the trip and helping with translation. He also presented to the group.
