This presentation examines what we know about the distribution of wealth by gender around the world...and asks why we do not know more. Professor Deere discusses the unequal ownership of household assets between men and women and how this inequality affects women's bargaining power and well-being and household decisions. She considers a number of factors that affect women's ability to accumulate wealth, with emphasis on the differing marital and inheritance regimes derived from common, Roman and Islamic law.
