Vietnam Trade Union Leaders Visit ILR
A delegation of top officials from Vietnam's VGCL labor confederation capped a one-week visit to the United States with a day of meetings at the ILR School September 10.
VGCL Vice President Mrs. Nguyen Thi Thu Hong, International Department Director Mrs.Hoang Thi Thanh, and Deputy Director Mr. Chau Nhat Binh met with ILR Dean Harry Katz and Associate Dean Richard Hurd, who described the structure and functioning of the ILR School. The Vietnamese leaders expressed their desire to learn more about ILR's trade union leadership programs and about the ILR curriculum. In addition to training union leaders, the VGCL has its own trade union university with broader academic offerings in the labor field.
Prof. Lisa Nishii, Chair of International Programs, hosted a meeting between the Vietnam delegation and faculty members from the International & Comparative Labor Department (see photo). They explored possible continued forms of collaboration such as student and professor exchanges and curriculum development assistance to enhance labor law and industrial relations education in Vietnam.
The delegation also visited the Catherwood Library and the Kheel archives, hosted by Research Librarian Aliqae Geraci and Kheel Center Director Cheryl Beredo.
Aware of ILR's prominence in the industrial relations field, the VGCL delegation specifically requested a visit to Ithaca after a week of meetings in Washington, D.C. with U.S. union and government officials.
The delegation was accompanied by 2008 MILR grad Alex Feltham, now an Asia program officer with the AFL-CIO Solidarity Center in Washington, D.C.
