Debate Team from Qatar Visits ILR
A few weeks ago, several students came from Weil Cornell Medical College in Qatar came to Cornell to debate with ILR’s debate team. The Weil Cornell Medical College is located in Education City, and is the first American university ever to offer its M.D. degree outside of the United States. Outside of the normal coursework provided at the college, one of the other subjects that students can study there is debate. The college also has a debate team that competes around the world, and at times, with Cornell’s ILR debate team in tournaments.
The representatives from the Qatar debate team came to US to do a tournament in Vermont and also to participate in a public debate with ILR’s debate team. The visit allowed both teams to practice with each other and offered an opportunity for a cultural exchange. The debate topic was about a controversial one, as it was about the belief of having a two state solution in the Middle East. The debate itself was a cultural exchange as students from both sides had strong feelings about the topic. Overall, the visit was a success as both teams walked away with great practice time and new perspectives.
