Evidence from the Hotel Industry

Examining employee supervision and compensation in the hotel industry, Professors Freedman and Kosova find that compared to franchised properties, company-owned hotels are:
- More likely to advertise wages above the minimum
- More likely to use lower probationary wages
- Less able to pay for performance as they monitor employees less intensively
Supervision differences due to ownership structure in this industry drive the use of performance-based incentives.
