Agency and Compensation:
Evidence from the Hotel Industry

Examining employee supervision and compensation in the hotel industry, Professors Freedman and Kosova find that compared to franchised properties, company-owned hotels are:

  • More likely to advertise wages above the minimum
  • More likely to use lower probationary wages
  • Less able to pay for performance as they monitor employees less intensively

Supervision differences due to ownership structure in this industry drive the use of performance-based incentives.
