Alumni Profile
Thomas J. Cahill IV, MILR '02
My current role is Director of Compensation for The Hartford in Simsbury, CT. After graduation, I came to work at The Hartford out of Cornell spending my first two years as a senior compensation consultant. I then accepted a developmental opportunity to work as an executive staff assistant to a line CFO. Having just completed that assignment, I have returned to corporate compensation in the Hartford's Life Company operations.
Prior to entering the MILR program, I earned a BA in Economics with Distinction from Hartwick College and an MBA in Finance and International Management from Boston College. I then worked for five years as a senior financial analyst for Fidelity Investments in the management and research division, and as an advisory professional at IBM working on global network outsourcing deals. I also continued to work for IBM in a limited capacity while a full-time student in the MILR program.
The MILR program helped me make the switch to human resources and accelerate my career in several ways. First, the quality of the education is extraordinary. Upon graduation, I possessed the knowledge and skills to effectively contribute at a high level in any organization across the full spectrum of human resource responsibilities. Second, the learning opportunity did not end when I left Cornell. It is a tremendous asset to have a faculty that remains collectively engaged and accessible throughout your career. In addition, the faculty works in close consultancy with the best companies in the world for human resources, thereby ensuring a curriculum and knowledge base that remains at the leading edge from both an academic and applied perspective.
