On Friday, October 6, 2006, the Cornell Global Labor Institute convened a meeting of trade union leaders and labor-based researchers from several countries to discuss trends and developments pertaining to the public sector. This meeting took place at a time when the failures of market-oriented politics to generate growth, sustainable development and social stability are rekindling support for state intervention among policy makers and civil society organizations.

The Goals of the meeting were:

  • To compare and analyze recent trends and developments and to assess their implications for grass roots organizing and coalition building.
  • To use data from several countries as tools in advocating for public services in a less defensive, more imaginative and proactive manner.

Oscar Olivera, Executive Secretary of the Federation of Factory Workers from Cochabamba, Bolivia was honored at Cornell on the evening prior to the roundtable for his contribution to worker organizing, movement building and defense of public services.
