Jobs, Justice, Climate: A Rally for Labor and Environmental Movements

On September 21st hundreds of labor, environmental, student, and community activists joined together for the Jobs Justice Climate rally at the New York Society for Ethical Culture to urge world leaders that to take decisive action on global warming in a way that reduces emissions, creates jobs and advances social justice. Speakers included President Mohamed Nasheed of the Maldives, Former Irish President Mary Robinson, Richard Trumka of the AFL-CIO, Jonathan Pershing, US Deputy Special Envoy for Climate Change, and many other notable speakers. Projects

UN Green Jobs Report 

Ronnie Goldberg, IOE; Achim Steiner, UNEP; Juan Somavia; ILO, Guy Rider, ITUC; Nick Nuttall, UNEP In partnership with the Worldwatch Institute, the Cornell Global Labor Institute co-authored a study for the UN Environment Programme entitled "Green Jobs: Towards Decent Work in a Sustainable, Low-Carbon World.  The report was released on September 24, 2008.

Labor Leaders Climate Forum
The Labor Leaders Climate Forum provides ongoing leadership development, technical assistance and research to trade unions on climate protection issues in order to enhance labor's capacity to develop and advocate for climate protection policies.  

Global Trade Union Task Force
The Cornell Global Labor Institute has convened a Global Trade Union Task Force on Development Alternatives.  The goal of the Task Force will be to produce a report that articulates an internationalist, sustainable and needs-driven development framework from a North-South perspective.  The Task Force recently met in Trinidad from April 19-21, 2009 to discuss the final recommendations of the report. The final draft of the report is scheduled to be finished in December 2009.
