Ishbel McWha joined the Employment and Disability Institute (EDI) as a Research Associate in 2011. She primarily undertakes research in collaboration with the Northeast ADA Center, but is also involved with EDI’s International Student Internship programs.
Trained in Industrial/Organizational Psychology, Ishbel’s previous work has focused on the application of I/O psychology to the international development arena, in particular studying the importance of relationships between local and foreign aid workers, and the impact of disparate salaries on those relationships, ultimately informing the success of capacity development and aid initiatives. She is particularly interested in identity, intergroup relations, workplace discrimination and stereotyping, decent work, and the social marketing of social issues such as poverty.
Prior to joining EDI, Ishbel worked as Project Manager/Research Officer for a DFID-ESRC funded research project, Project ADDUP, which brought together a multidisciplinary and international team of researchers to examine the impact of often considerable salary disparities on the performance and motivation of workers in lower-income settings. This research was undertaken across six countries: India, China, Malawi, Uganda, Solomon Islands and Papua New Guinea.
Ishbel is a member of the American Psychological Association (APA), the Society for Industrial & Organizational Psychology (SIOP), the International Association for Applied Psychology (IAAP), and the Global Taskforce for Humanitarian Work Psychology. She has lived and worked in numerous different countries, including India, Cambodia, Australia, New Zealand, and now the USA.
