Workplace Considerations for Employees with Non-Visible Disabilities People with disabilities comprise a significant percentage of our society. When we think about "disability" we often picture obvious disabilities such as someone who uses a wheelchair or who is blind. But actually a large proportion of individuals with disabilities actually have non-visible disabilities such as learning disabilities or psychiatric impairments. These individuals have a unique set of needs and issues, as well as potential challenges they may encounter in the workplace. This program will explore society's view of people with non-visible disabilities and how that can be reflected in the workplace. It will also explore issues around defining disability, disclosure, and confidentiality in the workplace. Specifically, this program will enable participants to: • Explore issues around defining what a disability can be and increase their knowledge about different types of disabilities; • Consider what affects the decision to disclose a disability and what the employer's obligations and options are for responding and addressing the needs of an employee who is disclosing having a non-visible disability; • Discuss how to navigate performance management issues that involve someone with a non-visible disability; and • Learn best practices around interacting and communicating with employees with disabilities and how to create a disability inclusive workplace.

This session will provide a basic overview of this important work incentive and how it applies to SSDI and SSI applicants and recipients.

Through the use of PowerPoint, lecture and written materials, participants will gain additional information that will assist any SSI beneficiary who wishes to return to work at any level of activity. Proper planning and information is critical to this effort and participants will gain the knowledge necessary to help ease this transition. This 4 hour program will provide attendees with an overview of the 2010 ADA Standards for Accessible Design and highlight those areas where accessibility requirements found in the 2010 Building Code of New York State differ from federal accessibility requirements. Specifically, this course will focus on: problem application areas in commercial facilities, accessibility requirements in existing facilities and accessibility requirements to and within special occupancies. We will also focus on the new guidelines for toilet rooms and other aspects of the built environment. While a majority of employees return to work before the end of their short-term disability benefit ends, what happens to those who transition to a long-term disability claim? This leadership series will address how employers manage the transition of employees from short- to long-term disability and best practices in keeping the lines of communication open between the employee, manager, carrier, and physician. Panelists will discuss how they work with carriers and physicians to create effective return to work plans for employees who are able to return from a long-term disability and how they manage the process for those employees who are unable to return to work.

Over the past several years, a number of significant workforce trends have confronted people with disabilities and disability service professionals. These trends impact the job-seeking and employment process for people with disabilities in several ways. Making sense of these new workplace developments and their implications is not only challenging, but may also have significant influence on potential employment outcomes. In this session we will consider a few of these trends including the impact of the recession on jobseekers with disabilities and the effect of the emerging labor pools of aging workers and veterans with disabilities.

It is projected that over a third of the American workforce will be over 50 years of age within five years, and this phenomenon is occurring in many other countries throughout the world. Businesses need to understand the complexities and recognize opportunities associated with an aging workforce to maintain marketplace competitiveness that continues to reward the innovation and responsiveness. This webinar will provide an overview of workplace policies and practices promoting effective retention of older workers, including workers with disabilities, gained from a recent study conducted by Cornell University of best practices in U.S. private sector workplaces. As a result, participants will be able to: * Describe specific workplace policy, practice and accommodation considerations for an aging workforce; * Identify examples of company best practices in accommodating an aging workforce; and * Access related key resources in the recruitment and retention of an older workforce.
