Office of Mental Health, Career Development Initiative Psychiatric Centers will give an update on Work: It's Everybody's Business!

There is no question that a core responsibility for citizenship is to be productive and to contribute to the greater good. Yet, there is a pattern that excuses people with disabilities from the expectation of employment. This session counters that pattern and offers six easy steps to facilitating individualized job development and connection to associational life. A brief review of commonly held beliefs and misperceptions about the negative impact of employment on SSI/SSDI benefits will round this session out.

Despite the passing of the ADA in 1990 and ADAAA in 2008, qualified jobseekers with disabilities continue to face significant barriers in getting permanent, viable jobs. While some of these barriers are directly related to having a disability, others are not and have to do more with subtle but distinct characteristics and changes in the labor market, business, and the organizational climate. Some of these trends could be good news for jobseekers with disabilities, while others may not be.
