Family and Medical Leave Act

The Family and Medical Leave Act of 1993 provides job-protected unpaid leave entitlement for eligible employees for up to 12 workweeks. An employer must grant an eligible employee up to a total of 12 workweeks of unpaid leave during any 12 month period for: the birth of a child and care of that child; the placement of a child for adoption or foster care; to care for an immediate family member with a serious health condition; and for an employee’s own serious health condition.
