Introduction Supplemental Security Income (SSI) is a federally-administered means-tested program available to individuals who are aged, blind and/or disabled who meet specific eligibility criteria. Having replaced individual state programs in 1974, SSI is intended to provide a basic level of income and health to assist a recipient in meeting the basic needs for food and shelter. The SSI program, administered by the Social Security Administration, contains a vast system of rules and regulations concerning categorical, financial and disability eligibility. This session will provide an organized, thematic view of this complex and important social program.
Key Topics
  • Income and Resource Tests and Other Eligibility Rules for the SSI Program
  • Federal Benefit Rate
  • Program Basics
  • Income and Resource Exclusions
  • In-kind Support
  • Property Essential to Self-Support (PESS)
  • Re-determination Reviews
  • Benefit for the Homeless
Special Features Lecture, PowerPoint presentation and written materials will guide participants through the complex maze of rules and regulations controlling the SSI program. Special knowledge will be gained concerning just how to deal with crises when they erupt. Individuals will be provided an eligibility case study to work through. A preparatory reading assignment will be provided and is required.
