Introduction The Social Security Administration (SSA) administers two disability benefit programs: Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) and Supplemental Security Income (SSI). The disability determination process is the same for both programs and will be reviewed in this course. All workers who have a FICA deduction from their paychecks are purchasing a disability insurance plan and retirement pension. SSA administers the insurance program that provides insured workers with disabilities cash and health benefits. This program has strict rules and processes for both the standard of disability and the determination process. Learn how disability decisions are made, who makes them, and what an applicant can do after receiving an unfavorable decision.
Key Topics
  • SSA’s Disability Determination Process and Disability Standard
  • Eligibility for SSDI
  • The SSA Appeals Process
  • The Continuing Disability Review Process
  • Continued Payment of Benefits to Children and Adults Who Medically Recover
Special Features This comprehensive discussion of SSA’s disability standard and the SSDI program uses PowerPoint, lecture and written materials to provide a detailed overview of the program the majority of American workers will depend upon should they become faced with a disabling medical condition. This detailed session provides opportunity for question and answer. A preparatory reading assignment will be provided and is required.
Who Will Benefit While any worker who pays FICA taxes will benefit from this session, attorneys, advocates, social workers, rehabilitation workers and job placement personnel will benefit from gaining information concerning the disability determination process, claimant appeal rights and processes and SSDI basics.
