Shon Hiatt : Biography
Shon is a Ph.D. candidate in organizational behavior and strategy at Cornell
University.
His research looks at the effects of institutional factors
on entrepreneurial opportunity creation, discovery, and exploitation. He also
investigates
the organizational processes, strategy, and networks of firms
in mature and emerging economies. His latest research
looks at how political institutions moderate entrepreneurial processes and firm
performance of 900 startups in Colombia. Other current projects
include investigating the effect of environmental
factors and firm strategies on biodiesel producer foundings, growth, and failure
(dissertation), studying the strategic
development
of American soft drink organizations, analyzing the relationship between Mexican entrepreneurial
firms and offshore manufacturing plants (maquiladoras), and researching the effect
of military ties on companies in Latin America.
An enthusiast of field research, Shon has conducted organizational, entrepreneurial,
and
strategy research, and consulted with international companies and organizations
in the United States, Spain, Colombia, Peru, Ecuador, Guatemala, Mexico, and the
Philippines. Shon earned a BA and an MPA from Brigham Young University, and an
MS in Organizational Behavior from Cornell University. He is the recipient of
the Cornell University Sage Fellowship. Shon lives in Ithaca, NY with his wife
Elizabeth and their two children Joseph and Charles.
