Length of Internships
Span of Internship
Each internship spans an academic semester (September through mid-December or mid-January through mid-May).
An Intern's Weekly Schedule
Interns are expected to devote about thirty hours a week for fourteen weeks to their assignments. The exact dates for beginning and ending the internship and any holiday time are agreed on by the intern and the sponsoring organization. The organization allows the intern the equivalent of one day a week for other academic work, either an ILR course (required of interns in Washington, D.C., and New York City), or a course taken at a nearby institution, to ensure the twelve credits necessary to maintain full-time status and to qualify for financial aid.
Summer Internships
Although no credit is granted for work during the summer, many organizations choose to employ interns over the summer months to permit work assignments that require more than a semester to complete.
