Samantha Rosa, BSILR '13
Law Offices of Louis D. Stober, NY
Having spent three and a half semesters on-campus at the ILR School, I was ready to make a change. I had spent so much time learning inside the classroom about the labor and employment law field, yet I had no sense of the practice in action, having never witnessed an arbitration or mediation. With law school on the horizon, I knew that I wanted to spend my last semester of my undergraduate career experiencing the legal field before fully committing to this career path. Luckily, I found the ILR Credit Internship Program, and it truly has been a one of a kind experience.
For the past semester, I had the privilege of interning at the Law Offices of Louis D. Stober, a small labor and employment law firm on Long Island. While the firm takes on a fair share of private clients, a majority of the work and services provided deal with the Civil Service Employees Union, or CSEA. With cases ranging from contract violation issues such as subcontracting to improper discharge due to employment discrimination, there was never a dull moment throughout the course of my internship. One of the many wonderful things about interning with Mr. Stober is the level of trust and faith he holds for all his interns. Despite my lack of a legal education, Mr. Stober and his fellow attorneys provided me with a wide range of responsibility and work. I helped to draft legal complaints and petitions, wrote discovery demand letters, worked on memorandums of law, and even helped prepare witness testimony for arbitrations and hearings, I was also able to hone my legal research skills through the use of the legal database site, WestLaw; with the ability to locate supportive case-law in my skill set, I am already at an advantage for law school. In addition to the variety of work I was able to perform, I was also fortunate enough to attend a variety of grievance committee meetings, arbitrations, hearings, court appearances, and more.
Participating in this internship has truly been a remarkable experience. Not only have I been able to put my education into action, but I have also been able to reconfirm my career aspirations. This internship has given me tremendous confidence in my abilities to succeed as a lawyer, and has also served to bolster my intentions of pursuing a career in the labor and employment law sector. With graduation only a few weeks away, I cannot be more grateful for the experience afforded to me through ILR and Mr. Stober's office.
