Gabriella Vega, BSILR '13
Walt Disney World, FL
After three years of a world-class education in the ILR School, I decided to put my education to the test. When I had heard of the ILR Credit Internship Program, I knew that I was in good hands. There were such a wide variety of internships to choose from, and in the end I chose the Labor Relations route.
I spent the Summer and Fall of 2012 working in the Labor Relations department for Walt Disney Parks & Resorts U.S. in Orlando, FL. On top of receiving all the perks imaginable for working at "the happiest place on earth", I was able to take part in a wide variety of work. As an intern, I created materials for workshops that trained front-line managers how to oversee unionized and nonunionized cast members. I assisted with negotiations for the Actors' Equity contract in Orlando and the Master Services contract for Disneyland Resort in Anaheim, CA. I organized and presented grievance summaries to Labor Relations Managers to support disciplinary actions taken toward cast members. I even had the opportunity to run my own grievance hearings!
Participating in the Credit Internship Program not only helped me grow as a student, but as a young woman entering the workplace. I was able to apply the knowledge and skills learned in the classroom, like the history of U.S. labor unions and legal research, with my ability to complete projects and tasks in a multidimensional industry. As I graduate in May, I will look back at this one-of-a-kind experience and know that it could not have been done without the amazing programs the ILR School has to offer!
