Health, Safety & Security
The safety and security of all of our students is a high priority for us. Crime rates, of course, depend on the city in which your student is interning. Most European cities have very low crime rates, however, your child should take reasonable precautions to ensure their safety. The most prevalent crime is pick-pocketing and theft. You should encourage your child to be very aware of their surroundings, not carry large amounts of cash, and safeguard their passport. For more information on safety, we encourage you to review the section of this website devoted to safety, security, & health with your son or daughter. Perhaps the biggest key to your child's safety is their personal conduct. An intoxicated student is one more likely to take risks or engage in dangerous activities when their judgment is impaired.
We require that your child is covered by a comprehensive health insurance policy. Comprehensive coverage includes:
- Medically necessary care (NOT just emergency care) while abroad
- Coverage for pre-existing conditions
- Coverage in their host country & during any travel you may take outside of Ireland
- Maximum benefit of at least $500,000 per year
- Provide coverage when you return from the international internship that will cover any conditions contracted abroad
We further require that your son or daughter print out a FrontierMEDEX insurance card, an organization that provides medical evacuation in the event of an emergency. This is a free service provided to each Cornell student, to print the card, the website is http://www.international.cornell.edu/medex_redirect Your son or daughter must have a Cornell net ID and password.
In an emergency, you must call FrontierMEDEX as pre-approval is required for medical evacuation. The 24 hour number is 410-453-6330, you may call collect. You should identify your child as a Cornell student and provide the Cornell group number #343211.
We also ask, in the event of an emergency, you contact our office as soon as is reasonable. We can be reached at: (607) 255-2266 or (607) 255-6691 or by email at firstname.lastname@example.org.
