We have internship opportunities in our Human Resources and Labor Relations Departments:
Human Resources Internship:
A two-week orientation in which the intern will receive a broad overview and understanding of all areas of the Human Resources Department's organizational structure and business. As part of this overview, the intern will receive a comprehensive look at each speciality group in the HR department and learn about the profession of the railroad industry.
The student will spend the remaining 12 weeks working in three HR specialty groups:
4 weeks: Compensation & Benefits- working with pension plans, 401k, railroad retirement, FMLA, long term disability, and legal services; organize company events, creating manuals and presentations, create and maintain tracking spreadsheets.
4 weeks: Employee Development- work closely with the training of new management employees, handling of travel arrangements for employees, assisting with the development of new management trainee manuals, creating and reformatting training classes, creating new tests, surveys, and performance reviews, participating in interview panels.
4 weeks: Employment- works closely with the hiring of professional employees, works with colleges and universities to schedule recruiting events, handling of travel arrangements for interview candidates, attend recruiting events, screen applications and select candidates for interviews, observes the interview and hiring process, extend employment offers, create and maintain tracking spreadsheets.
The performance of these tasks will provide the intern with comprehensive exposure to the work of the Human Resources professional.
In addition, the intern will receive a research project within the first few weeks of the internship as a focus assignment to prepare independently. This project will be on a current topic of relevance to the department. Prior to the end of the semester, the intern will be responsible for a departmental presentation about that particular topic.
LABOR RELATIONS INTERNSHIP:
A two week orientation in which the intern will receive a broad overview and understanding of both the Labor Relations Department's organizational structure and business as well as Norfolk Southern Railroad's overall structure and business. As part of this overview, the intern will receive a comprehensive look at the Railroad Labor Relations profession and the railroad industry.
The remaining weeks will be devoted to the following types of tasks and assignments:
Monitor compliance with, as well as interpret, collective bargaining agreements with the assistance of the appropriate Labor Relations Officer.
Evaluate disciplinary action taken by field officers and draft summaries of the incident investigations.
Review and summarize arbitration awards to gain familiarity with the arbitration process.
Prepare ex-parte briefs, under the direction of the appropriate Labor Relations Officer, for cases to be heard in arbitration
Participate in the arbitration process through either a mock arbitration or an actual arbitration hearing.
The performance of these tasks will provide the intern with comprehensive exposure to the work of the Labor Relations professional.

SKILLS & STIPEND:
Students must be effective in working both as a team member and independently in a very fast-paced environment; must be familiar with PC operating systems, especially with Windows 2000 and XP; must have working knowledge of MS Office Applications; and knowledge of LAN/WAN network connectivity is desirable. Web programming is also preferred.
Majors Preferred: Norfolk Southern will consider candidates pursuing a Business degree with an interest in the Human Resources profession. Candidates must meet a minimum 2.8/4/0 GPA overall; 3/0/4.0 in major. Salary for this full-time position depends on class level at the time of employment.
Salaries:
Junior - @ $2,335/month
Senior - @ $2,545/month
Students that relocate more than 50 miles from their home or school residence qualify for an additional $250/pay period (two pay periods/month).
