Since 1999, Cornell ILR has provided the nation's premier program for the study of workplace conflict resolution. At the request of many of our students, we are offering for the first time, a series of courses in alternative dispute resolution outside the workplace arena.

Professor Steven Yussem of the Cornell Law School will serve as lead instructor for this important new course which examines the issues, problems and challenges for arbitrators and mediators involved in commercial and international alternative dispute resolution.

  • Commercial ADR: A primer for ADR neutrals
  • What every mediator and arbitrator must know about the laws impacting our professions
  • Mediating/Arbitrating complex, multiparty disputes: Issues and challenges
  • Where the Cases come from: Working with an ADR Provider or "Flying Solo"?
  • Workshop: The complex commercial case
  • International ADR: Fundamentals
  • International treaties and other Laws which impact and define the neutral's practice

Practice Issues:

  • Establishing an appropriate fee policy
  • Establishing your practice and tips on avoiding common mistakes
  • Malpractice insurance and the ADR professional: What commercial and international ADR neutrals need to know.
  • Workshop: Arbitrating the international case.

This training program will include group studies, role plays and other hands-on exercises as well as personal feedback from the Cornell training faculty.

Each student who successfully completes the course will receive a certificate and be eligible to apply for the Cornell Roster of ADR professionals (Commercial/International Section).
