Past CHERI Updates9.17.2003Several tidbits of note: "The Role and Effect of Remedial Education in Two-Year Colleges," a CHERI Conference paper for the October 2003 conference, by Bettinger and Long, is now available. James Monk's paper on "Increasing Earnings Inequality in Faculty Labor Markets" is the newest working paper, CHERI WP 40. And finally, we are pleased to announce the addition of several Cornell students to the CHERI team. Undergraduates Afian Anwar '05 and Jesenka Mrdjenovic '07, and graduate students Albert Yung-Hsu Liu and Joseph Price, are now all research assistants affiliated with CHERI. 9.7.2003CHERI WP 39, a working paper by Ronald Ehrenberg exploring the U.S. News and World Report's college ranking system is now available. The paper was prepared for the Wisconsin Center for the Advancement of Postsecondary Education Forum on The Use and Abuse of College Rankings, to be held in November 2003. 8.27.2003With the CHERI conference on the "Complex Community College" less than two months away, conference papers are beginning to be received and are being made available on the conference website. The Romano and the Gill and Leigh papers have already been posted. Remember to frequent this site often to check for more newly uploaded conference papers. 8.14.2003Ehrenberg and Klaff's "Changes in Faculty Composition Within the State University of New York System: 1985 - 2001," CHERI WP 38, is now available in the Working Papers section of the CHERI site. 8.12.2003New versions of CHERI WP 25 (Groen and White) and CHERI WP 34 (Groen) have been uploaded and may be accessed from the CHERI Working Papers section. 8.10.2003The final version of CHERI Working Paper 26, "Resident and Nonresident Tuition and Enrollment at Flagship State Universities," by Michael J. Rizzo and Ronald G. Ehrenberg, is now available in the Working Papers section. The paper will be found as a chapter in the forthcoming book, "College Decisions: How Students Actually Make Them and How They Could," Caroline Hoxby ed., to be published by the University of Chicago Press. A new draft of Matthew Nagowski's "Associate Professor Turnover in American Colleges and Universities," CHERI WP 31, has been uploaded to the Working Papers section as well. 5.24.2003CHERI WP 37, "Faculty Productivity In Supervising Doctoral Students' Dissertations at Cornell University" by Cornell undergraduates Peter Crosta and Iris Packman is now available in the CHERI Working Papers section. Also, the CHERI Conference on "Science and the University" was held this past week in Ithaca, New York. A collection of some of the papers presented at the conference are found on the conference page, and a Cornell Chronicle article about the conference may be accessed here. 5.5.2003The Black/Stephan, Groen/Rizzo, and Borjas papers for the CHERI May 2003 Conference on "Science and the University" are now available on the conference page. 4.28.2003As CHERI's fourth conference on higher education, "Science and the University," is fast approaching, please remember to check back to this website periodically for newly updated conference papers, found here. In the past week, we have uploaded papers by Stephan and Levin, Lieberwitz, and Coffman, Lecher, and McCouth. 4.21.2003CHERI Working Paper 35, "Tracking Community College Transfers Using National Student Clearinghouse Data" by Richard M. Romano and Martin Wisniewski has been uploaded to the CHERI Working Papers section. 4.14.2003A CHERI conference paper for the May 2003 conference, "Who Bears the Growing Cost of Science at Universities?" by Ehrenberg, et. al. is now also available as a CHERI working paper (WP 35). 4.9.2003A new working paper (WP 34), entitled, "The Effect of College Location on Migration of College-Educated Labor" by Jeffrey A. Groen, and an update of a previously posted working paper (WP 25), "In-State versus Out-of-State Students: The Divergence of Interest between Public Universities and State Governments" by Groen and White, are both now available in the CHERI Working Papers section. 4.7.2003CHERI's most recent working paper, WP 33, "Start Up Costs in American Research Universities" by Ehrenberg, Rizzo, and Condie is now available. Also, a new version of Ehrenberg, Rizzo, and Jakubson's conference paper on "Who Bears the Growing Costs of Science at the University?" has been uploaded to the May 2003 CHERI Conference page. 3.31.2003Last week the annual CHERI update to the CHERI email list service was sent out to all subscribers of the list service. Co-authored by Ronald Ehrenberg, Michael Rizzo, and George Jakubson, it is entitled, "Who Bears the Growing Cost of Science at Universities?" 2.11.2003The latest version of CHERI Working Paper 26, "Resident and Nonresident Tuition and Enrollment at Flagship State Universities," by Michael J. Rizzo and Ronald G. Ehrenberg, is now available in the Working Papers section. 2.7.2003"Associate Professor Turnover in American Colleges and Universities," a new CHERI Working Paper authored by Matthew Nagowski, is accessible as Working Paper 31 in CHERI's Working Papers section. 1.27.2003The survey section of the site has been updated with the results (as well as the questionnaires used) from CHERI's Spring 2002 "Survey of Start-Up Costs and Laboratory Allocation Rules at Research and Doctoral Universities" of 222 research universities. 1.21.2003A new preliminary schedule for the May 20-21, 2003 CHERI Conference has been uploaded. 1.17.2003Working Paper 28, "The Effects of Class Size on Student Achievement in Higher Education: Applying an Earnings Function," by Kokkelenberg, et al. has been updated with a more recent version. 1.15.2003A new version of Ronald Ehrenberg's paper, "Econometric Studies of Higher Education," is now available in the Working Papers section. 12.23.2002CHERI is pleased to announce its 4th annual conference on higher education, to be held in Ithaca on May 20-21, 2003. This years conference will be titled "Science and the University." Working Paper 29, "Econometric Studies of Higher Education," by Ronald Ehrenberg, will be published in a forthcoming special edition of the Journal of Econometrics. Meanwhile, Working Paper 30, "Do Median Grades Vary Across Departments" was written by Jay Parekh, an undergraduate economics major in Cornell's College of Arts and Sciences. 11.11.2002Two new CHERI Working Papers are available and may be found in the CHERI Working Papers section. Working Paper 27, by Ehrenberg and Smith, is a new draft of CHERI WP 13, "The Sources and Uses of Annual Giving at Selective Private Research Universities and Liberal Arts Colleges." Meanwhile, Working Paper 28, by Kokkelenberg, et al., is titled, "The Effects of Class Size on Student Achievement in Higher Education: Applying an Earnings Function." 9.17.2002As the new academic year starts, the Cornell Higher Education Research Institute would like to welcome four new students affiliated with our research institute. On the undergraduate level, Iris Packman and Peter Costra are now working for CHERI. Likewise, graduate students Scott Condie and Ching-Mei Chen are now affiliated with the institute. Over the years, numerous CHERI Conference Papers have gone on to be published in various scholarly and academic journals. From the 1999 conference, the papers by Clotfelter, Eisenberg and Wells, and Hilmer have new citations. Meanwhile, stemming from the 2001 conference, the papers by Lowry, Reindl and Brower, and Bound, et. al. have been published. Please visit the respective conference years to obtain the full citations and the papers of these recently published works.
And finally, after a week of updating the site's organizational structure, colors and aesthetics, and implementing the blogger updating engine, the CHERI site has now been fully overhauled. While the basic layout of the site remains the same, we hope the revisions will provide a cleaner, more intuitive experience for the end user. We hope you enjoy the site! established in the fall of 1998 to provide a vehicle for
interdisciplinary research on higher education. Its
affiliated faculty come from 5 different Cornell colleges
and span a wide variety of disciplines. CHERI is funded
by grants from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation and The
Atlantic Philanthropies (Inc.) . Ronald G. Ehrenberg, the Irving M. Ives Professor of Industrial and Labor Relations and Economics at Cornell University, is the Director of CHERI. Prior to the creation of CHERI, he served as Cornell's Vice President for Academic Programs, Planning and Budgeting.
