New York Center for Law and Justice, Inc. (Available)

The New York Center for Law and Justice is a legal services organization that provides direct representation to deaf New Yorkers who are indigent and of modest means. The law center fills a vacuum in the legal services field by focusing its practice on a particular cross section of the metropolitan population-deaf and hard of hearing New Yorkers-who are referred to the law center by social service agencies or otherwise learn about the New York Center as a result of its general reputation in the community. We are the only public interest law firm focused primarily upon representing the deaf and hard of hearing community in New York City. We understand deaf culture and employ certified American Sign Language interpreters who have substantial experience in working with this special population of New Yorkers. The law center aims to represent clients in areas as diverse as landlord tenant disputes, spousal abuse matters and applications for public entitlements, including food stamps and assistance for the homeless. We partner, additionally, with a task force to improve the delivery of qualified sign language interpreters in the courts of the State of New York.
