Michael F. Nozzolio, ILR '73, began his sixth term as New York State Senator in 2003. Senator Nozzolio represents New York State's 54th district, which is composed of Seneca and Wayne counties and parts of Ontario, Monroe, Cayuga and Tompkins counties. Senator Nozzolio is a native of Seneca Falls, where he currently resides with his wife, Rosemary Nozzolio.
In addition to his ILR degree, Nozzolio holds a Master's degree from Cornell University's College of Agriculture and Life Sciences and a Juris Doctor degree from the Syracuse University College of Law.
Senator Nozzolio is a staunch and outspoken proponent of criminal justice reform and victims' rights. Senator Nozzolio chairs the Senate Crime Victims, Crime and Correction Committee and is a Co-Chairman of the Senate Majority Task Force on Privacy Invasion.
He is a Commander in the New York Naval Militia and was appointed Liaison Officer to the New York State Canal Corporation and Special Advisor on Security Affairs in New York State. He also served on the Executive Committee of the Senate Majority Task Force on World Trade Center Recovery.
Michael Nozzolio has served as Chairman of the Senate Elections Committee and pushed through New York's landmark Voter Registration Act of 1994. He was also responsible for hearings which uncovered election fraud in New York City. Prior to serving in the Senate, Nozzolio served for 10 years in the New York State Assembly. He has been honored with numerous awards and accolades for his efforts in many different fields
Michael Nozzolio has been a staunch supporter of ILR and has demonstrated a firm commitment to helping maintain world-class facilities and collections at the School, thus ensuring ILR’s continued preeminence among institutions of its type. In addition to membership in the alumni associations of ILR and CALS, he serves on Cornell’s Agriculture and Food Technology Park Board of Directors. Nozzolio is a member of the Catherwood Library Advisory Council. Martin P. Catherwood was a great mentor and friend to young Michael Nozzolio during his time on campus and subsequently. Michael credits his two years of research internship experience with M. P. Catherwood as having inspired him to pursue a career in public life.
