Student Life at ILR
ILR students are extremely active on and off campus, and they like to organize and participate in the over 800 student organizations at Cornell. ILR student organizations include the following:
ILR Student Government Association (SGA)
ILR is the only undergraduate college at Cornell to have its own student government. SGA student representatives are liaisons between the student body, faculty, and staff. In addition to publishing a newsletter for the school, they engage and support the ILR community by organizing events throughout the year. This includes our Dinner with the Dean event, midterm and final study breaks, fundraisers for community organizations, and roundtable career discussions with members of the ILR Alumni Association.
ILR Global Affairs Club (IGAC)
IGAC is a new organization for students who are interested in international affairs and issues affecting today’s global workplace. They host forums and special events, as well as aid members in their pursuit of international travel experiences. Recent IGAC activities include co-hosting a Cultural Dinner night with the ILR International Graduate Student Association, and organizing forums with professors and alumni to discuss the effects of NAFTA, microfinance and other poverty reduction programs in Latin America, and outsourcing to India.
ILR Sports Management Club
The Sports Management Club is for students interested in discussing the many topics and careers associated with sports. They work to help students find internships and jobs, host a radio show on Cornell's Slope Radio, and also bring in speakers to discuss their career paths, such as NHL Commissioner and ILR alum Gary Bettman. They recently published their first newsletter, which contained a number of articles that highlight how knowledge and skills developed at ILR can be applied to the world of sports. This included articles that analyzed whether the same statistical performance evaluations used in baseball can be applied to soccer, the effects of the economic crisis on the NBA, and whether college athletes should be paid.
ILR Women's Caucus
The ILR Women's Caucus devotes its attention to the opportunities and challenges facing women in the workplace. They have brought several renowned speakers to campus, including Betty Friedan, Susan Eisenberg, and Sonia Pressman Fuentes; they have organized many volunteer activities throughout campus and the community; and they have sponsored information sessions on topics such as women abroad programs, foreign work experiences, and women in law. Membership is open to anyone interested in the goals of the organization.
Cornell Organization for Labor Action (COLA)
The Cornell Organization for Labor Action is a non-hierarchical organization of students committed to the struggle for economic justice. These students contribute their energies not only to the labor movement within Ithaca, but also across the United States, and around the world.
ILR Ambassador Program
ILR Ambassadors are student volunteers who host prospective students and participate in all admissions events. You are always welcome to visit and meet with an ILR Ambassador for lunch, or to sit in on classes or stay overnight. To schedule a visit, please email Michelle Kremer, the President of the ILR Ambassadors.
Minority Industrial and Labor Relations Student Organization (MILRSO)
The MILRSO provides social, academic, and pre-professional support to its members. Open to all ILR students, MILRSO fosters cross-cultural friendships and dialogue. MILRSO coordinates an annual symposium and workshops that address the experiences and contributions of people of color in the workplace. They maintain corporate and alumni contacts to aid in members' professional development.
