Why ILR?

We are often asked if ILR is a business, pre-law, or liberal arts program. At the ILR School, our undergraduate program is all of these things and more. You will develop a solid background in the liberal arts and social sciences with required core courses in management, economics, psychology, history, law, government, and statistics.

You can then build on this foundation by choosing elective courses based on your specific interests, from law, business, and negotiations, to human resource management, public policy, labor economics, and other areas. You will have the opportunity to tailor the ILR curriculum to these and other interests you may have through elective classes from all seven undergraduate schools at Cornell, as well as some courses from Cornell's Johnson Graduate School of Management, Law School, and Public Affairs graduate program.

Start here to discover how our curriculum, student organizations, study abroad, and internship opportunities may be the perfect fit for your academic and career interests.

Special Academic Options

A semester in Switzerland working at a U.N. agency to improve human rights, or on Capitol Hill conducting policy research. A summer in NYC learning about the challenges of organizational consulting and financial advising, or in Mexico helping farmworkers improve their leadership skills.

Whether you are interested in studying or working in New York, California, Washington, D.C., Ireland, England, or Africa, ILR offers a variety of opportunities to enhance your academic experience. Read more about these and other recent study and work experiences.

Student Life

ILR students are actively involved in organizations within ILR and throughout the university. If you have any questions about what life is like at Cornell, please email an ILR student.

Student Support

The ILR Student Services and Career Services staff are available to help you with pre-law advising, study abroad opportunities, research participation and winter, summer, and semester-long internships. Students also benefit from our dedicated Faculty, as well as the resources of ILR's Catherwood Library. Special services for multicultural students are also available.

It’s been so valuable to be able to say that at ILR, I’m not just learning the skills of an economist, political scientist, or a historian or a manager: I’m learning how these disciplines all work together and affect each other.
