Why ILR?

The ILR School offers an interdisciplinary curriculum that prepares students for leadership positions in business, law, government, international affairs, public policy, labor relations, human resources, nonprofit, and more.

The field of Industrial and Labor Relations explores the domestic and international workplace from historical, modern, economic, social, and organizational perspectives. ILR is unique because it is the only school in the United States devoted exclusively to this field at the undergraduate level.

Students attracted to the ILR program enjoy classes in government, history, law, economics, psychology, sociology and statistics. They are problem solvers, community volunteers, and organization leaders. Students who are looking for a college experience that allows them to explore multiple academic interests and encourages them to discover how these transform to exciting career and graduate school possibilities find ILR to be a good fit.

ILR is home to over 980 undergraduate students, 65 teaching faculty, and 170+ distinctive courses offered in six departments.  Students develop a solid background in the liberal arts and social sciences with required courses in management, economics, psychology, history, law, government, and statistics.

Building on this foundation, students choose electives based on their specific interests, which can range from law, business, government, international relations, and negotiations, to human resource management, public policy, labor economics, and other areas.  Tailoring the curriculum in this way is possible by selecting ILR electives across the six different ILR departments and elective courses from Cornell's other undergraduate colleges, as well as some courses from Cornell's Johnson Graduate School of Management, Law School, and Public Affairs graduate program.
