White House pay gap needs explanation

In the press conference that followed President Barack Obama issuing two new executive actions related to the gender pay gap on Equal Pay Day (Tuesday April 8, 2014), Spokesman Jay Carney tried to explain why there is a gender pay gap of 12% among White House employees.

Francine D. Blau, Frances Perkins Professor of Industrial and Labor Relations and Professor of Economics and an ICS Research Fellow, joined NPR's All Thing's Considered to clarify those factors that most explain the gender pay gap. Professor Blau is the 2010 recipient of the IZA prize in labor economics and author of many scholarly works including Gender, Inequality, and Wages, and The Economics of Women, Men, and Work (7th edition).
